    What is Tooth Recontouring

Dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even overlapping teeth in just one session, by removing very tiny amount of tooth structure using diamond burr.

Recontouring is an effective method to correct minor imperfections, such as:

    •  Fixing small chips in the tooth
    • Smoothing out bulges or pits in a tooth’s enamel
    •  Adjusting slight irregular tooth shapes caused by too many or uneven teeth
    • Adjusting the length of the canines (the pointed eyeteeth)

Recontouring can also improve overall dental health by removing crevices or overlaps between teeth in which plaque or tartar can accumulate.

With a little dental contouring, you can make a huge difference in the way you feel about your smile. It is often used as part of a broader programme of treatment, which can include tooth whitening, veneers and crowns.

      Procedure of tooth recontouring:

Your cosmetic dentist will take x-rays to evaluate the size and location of the pulp of each tooth to ensure that there’s enough bone between the teeth to support them. The cosmetic dentist will mark your teeth with a pencil prior to performing the procedure. As your cosmetic dentist sculpts the tooth, imperfections are artfully eliminated or minimized. A sanding drill is used to remove small amounts of surface enamel gradually. Abrasive strips are then moved back and forth between your teeth to shape the actual sides of your teeth. Then the teeth are smoothed and polished. Usually anesthetic is not needed. Teeth contouring and reshaping usually takes one visit.

Contouring teeth may also help correct small problems with bite. It is common for bonding to be combined with tooth reshaping to achieve a beautiful smile.

      When is recontouring not appropriate?

Recontouring is not recommended if your teeth have extensive imperfections, such as a substantial chip or deep fracture. Recontouring is not a substitute for veneers or bonding; however, it is often used in combination with these procedures.

If you have badly chipped or crooked teeth, your dentist may choose to recommend a different type of treatment rather than recontouring. For example, porcelain veneers are thin layers of porcelain that can be bonded to your teeth. They last for around a decade and present the appearance of white, uniform teeth when you smile. Porcelain veneers can therefore cover up a host of chips, cracks, discolouration and crooked teeth, which recontouring would only make a minimal difference to.

Tooth reshaping, or tooth sculpting, is a safe and conservative way to improve your smile. Teeth may become weaker if large amounts of enamel are removed, tooth reshaping should be limited to minor changes or combined with veneers or bonding for the best smile.
